2. "If my life could be contained in a word it would be this one: accidents. Not only do I share in a notorious family history of calamity and accident, not only was I involved in a life-altering accident at age seven, not only would I be involved in a few more accidents in my time, I actually was an accident; as you might have imagined, my birth was not a planned one."
5. "You're a gentleman," they used to say to him. "You shouldn't have gone murdering people with a hatchet; that's no occupation for a gentleman."
6. "The gunman is useless. I know it. He knows it. The whole bank knows it. Even my best mate, Marvin, knows it, and he's more useless than the gunman. The worst part about the whole thing is that Marv's car is standing outside in a fifteen-minute parking zone. We're all facedown on the floor, and the car's only got a few minutes left on it."
7. "There was a point to this story, but it has temporarily escaped the chronicler's mind."
8. "I don't know, apathetic bloody planet, I've no sympathy at all."
9. "In my desert vocabulary I tried to find some words of condolence and apology, but all I managed to do was massacre her parents and rape her sister. I really wasn't made for social life."
10. "Two years after my mother died, my father fell in love with a glamorous blonde Ukrainian divorcée. He was eighty-four and she was thirty-six. She exploded into our lives like a fluffy pink grenade, churning up the murky water, bringing to the surface a sludge of sloughed-off memories, giving the family ghosts a kick up the backside."
12. "Juliet's version of cleanliness was next to godliness, which was to say that it was erratic, past all understanding and was seldom seen."
13. "All the children at my school are stupid. Except I'm not meant to call them stupid, even though that is what they are."
15. "All the doors in this spaceship have a cheerful and sunny disposition. It is their pleasure to open for you, and their satisfaction to close again with the knowledge of a job well done."

Dagens quiz blir som følger:
Use the following anecdotes to identify each author below.
1. When this Russian writer's first novel was well received in 1846, he joined a revolutionary group that was infiltrated by the authorities. Together with several associates, he was tried and sentenced to be shot. The execution was a cruel hoax and, at the very last minute, the sentence was commuted to years of hard labour in Siberia. Ten years later he returned to St. Petersburg as a conservative and became one of the greatest of all Russian authors.
2. When this Irish playwright was stopped by U.S. customs in New York, he proclaimed, "I have nothing to declare except my genius."
3. The poet Lord Byron challenged a group of his friends to create their own ghost stories. From that challenge came The Modern Prometheus (more famously known by a different name), written by this twenty-one-year-old wife of another romantic poet.
4. The science-fiction stories of this French author were called "dreams come true". So prophetic was his description of a periscope in one of his books that a few years later the actual inventor of the instrument was refused permission for an original patent.

QUIZ
Her er månedens første dagsquiz:
Provide the name for each character referred to in each title below.
1. Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame
2. James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans
3. Robert Bolt's A Man for All Seasons
4. Oliver Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield
5. D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterly's Lover
6. Edward Everett Hale's The Man Without a Country
7. Alexandre Dumas's The Three Musketeers
8. Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov
9. Louisa May Alcott's Little Women
10. Richard Wright's Native Son
